Just as it is

Sunday, February 22nd, 2009

"Allow everything to be just as it is."  This is a statement I use often in Qigong classes.  It comes from the Zuowang meditation practice.  Rather than focusing on one thing, like the breath, to quiet the mind, the Zuowang approach is to maintain a focus-less awareness.  You are not blocking out what is, but you are not drawn in by it either – whether it is a sound, a distracting thought, a sensation, etc.  We simply allow the moment to be what it is.

How many moments do we spend with that aching in our bellies to accomplish something, to prove something, to be something?  Zuowang is like widening the camera lens to encompass a broader awareness, and to simply be the photographer, observing.  Try it – right now.  Stop reading and open up your lens to the present moment.  Aware of everything, yet focused on no one thing.

This is a powerful practice, even if we practice just half a minute every now and then.

The Yin of Rain

Friday, February 6th, 2009

At last, we are blessed with much needed rain today.  And it comes on a rare day when I have absolutely nothing on my calendar.  Of course, I have a "to do list," but no classes to teach or client appointments.  I welcome these days when I have a chance to replenish.  I’m content to sit inside and piddle away at my list.  As much as I love the sun and bright days, the nourishing rain and the nourishing quiet time are a welcome relief.

We are in the Yin season of Winter.  It is a time to rest, reflect, and replenish our vital energies, so that we are ready to become more active in the Yang of the coming Spring and Summer.  So it is a day like today, when the rain falls and we huddle indoors, that I call a "Yin Day."  We all need Yin Days now and then, whether it is raining or not.  If we don’t take enough of them, our bodies become sick or fatigued to the point where we’re forced to take a Yin Day.

May the rain wash away your troubles, moisten your dry spirit, and bless you with tranquil moments.
