What is Qigong?
Qigong (pronounced "chee-goong") is a gentle yet powerful self-healing art with
origins from ancient China. The practice includes soft rhythmic movement,
self-massage, self-acupressure, breathing, focused attention, visualization, and
meditation. Qi (also known as ch'i) means "energy," and gong means "skill and
mastery through work and practice." Qigong is a simple but comprehensive
health care system that helps us to cultivate free-flowing vital energy to maintain
or restore health and harmony to body, heartmind, and spirit. The movements
are easy, relaxing, rejuvenating, and adaptable to nearly every ability.
Qigong has a rich and long history, rooted in the Daoist philosophy of flowing in
harmony with the rhythms of nature and the universe. Our universe is in a
continual state of flux. It is fluid and cyclical, not linear. Through Qigong practice,
we learn to relax into the waves of creation and destruction, and develop clarity
and balance within the rhythms of yin and yang. Yin represents stillness,
softness, and the downward flow of qi. Yang represents movement, strength,
and the upward flow of qi.
There are tens of thousands of styles of Qigong. Lori teaches Integral Qigong, an
open system that embraces all practices and is infused with the rich traditions of
Medical and Spiritual Qigong.

What is Tai Chi?
Tai Chi (aka taijiquan) is a type of Qigong that strings movements together in a fluid form that strengthens balance and mental focus. Tai Chi
has its roots in the martial arts, but is typically practiced for its health and meditative effects. Lori teaches Integral Tai Chi (9 movements)--a
modified short form that is easier to learn than the longer, more complex forms which usually consist of 24, 37, or 108 movements. Each class
includes Qigong warm ups, review and refinement of individual arm and leg movements, and practice of the complete form. Beginners may join
the class at any time. YouTube videos are available for assistance with home practice and to aid newcomers in feeling comfortable joining the
ongoing class.
What are the benefits?
Energy is plentiful, free, and a tremendous source of healing. By releasing tension and moving gently and mindfully, we allow energy to flow
freely along a system of circuits called meridians and energy fields called dantians for distribution throughout the body. Practicing Qigong and
Tai Chi can reduce stress, increase vitality, enhance the immune system, improve cardiovascular and respiratory function, energize the
lymphatic system, and leave you feeling blissfully at peace. Just a few moments of practice can open the space for healing to begin.
What do I need?
Qigong and Tai Chi are performed mostly standing, so you might want to wear warm, comfortable clothing you can easily move in. Weather
permitting, classes will be held outside. Dressing in layers is recommended. You may practice in tai chi shoes or bare feet indoors and
comfortable shoes, tai chi shoes, or bare feet outdoors.
